If you have a garden, composting is one of the best and easiest things you can do to keep your plants healthy and thriving. By simply using some food waste and the proper tools, you can create compost for your garden.
1. Know what to compost – and what not to compost
Not everything that goes into your food waste bin can be composted, but here’s a list of things that can be:
• kitchen scraps (raw fruits, vegetables, egg shells)
• coffee grounds and filters
• newspaper, non-glossy cardboard, paper towels
• yard waste (leaves, grass clippings, plant and flower clippings)
And here’s what you can’t compost:
• meats and dairy products
• processed foods
• plastic, metals and man-made substances
2. Pick the right location
It’s important to pick a shady spot for your compost pile, preferably out of the way in a corner of your garden. Shade is ideal so your compost pile won’t dry out, but if it does, you can add water to it. If you prefer to have a closed bin for your compost to deter pests, that’s an option too.
3. Know how to compost
Keep a compost bucket in your kitchen to collect food scraps, and take it out to the compost pile each time it’s full. Make a hole in your pile, dump the scraps in it, and cover it with soil to prevent attracting wildlife. Make sure your compost pile has a good mixture of nitrogen-rich and carbon-rich materials. When you need soil, just grab it from the bottom of the pile.
